Salinity problems due to sea-water intrusion have been encountered in fish farm areas on Taiwan’s western coastal plains, where the extraction of groundwater from the aquifer to supply the fishponds has also caused land subsidence. The subsiding plain has left fish farms susceptible to greater coastal erosion and storm damage (Lin, 1996). Another consequence of the excessive pumping of water from the aquifer in this area is thought to be a more dangerous form of groundwater poisoning. In the Yun-Lin region, Liu et al. (2003) have shown that the area of groundwater over-pumping is coincident not only with areas of high sea-water salinization, but also with arsenic pollution. The arsenic is released into the groundwater by excess dissolved oxygen introduced by over-pumping.
